A Place of Peace & Tranquillity

Well, this is my garden, still in development, but something I wish to share as it is transformed into something truly beautiful :)

I could mosaic every blank wall in here if I wished; and it's beginning to look that way.  But I just love creating and wish to create something both I and my family can enjoy throughout the year.  For a garden isn't just a place to relax, it can be somewhere to meditate, interact with the wildlife and even discover new insight :)

It wasn't an unattractive garden when we moved in but I felt it was a little plain.  So many possibilities here, so many beautiful things to create.

I have already been applying mosaic to the coping stones on the tops of the lower walls.  The garden is built on a hill so it is slightly terraced.  It features a squarish lawn at the top and beds below but on different levels and finally the house at the bottom.  So really there is no grass near the property, only blank retaining walls.

As can be seen from the above image the area was a little stark and had problems with soil escaping over the walls.  The latter has now been resolved with the addition of bamboo edging bought very cheaply from Poundland :)  The rail has also been painted and the coping stone to the right has had mosaic applied.  The one on the left is still being transformed.  The right coping stone and rail can be seen in the image below:

I was originally going to use a design of reds and bright colours for these but since going to doing spontaneous mosaics (little or no planning) this is what felt right.  This one is a mixture of glass shapes, gems, mirror tiles and blue glass tiles.  There's actually been a large use of glass gems, shapes and mirrors in this garden as it sparkles so beautifully in the sunlight :)  The next image shows another coping stone which runs parallel with the back of the house.

First Coping Stone Mosaic

This was about the first mosaic I created in the garden and it stretches over about two coping stones.  The flower like designs of glass gems actually sit on circular mirror tiles.  It was an idea I had for further catching of the sunlight; a technique that has now evolved into many other projects in the garden as it works so well.

The Pebble Wall & Healing Mosaic

This was created on an odd wall, higher than the others but with no coping stone on the top.  I had considered putting one on but then had the idea of covering it with pebbles instead; these were also purchased from Poundland.  The wall sloped upwards from the previous coping stone very unevenly.  For this reason, applying pebbles was a perfect solution as they do not need to be laid flat.

The 'Healing' was a last minute idea.  I was thinking of placing various shades of stones to create a pattern, then this became a word.  They have been grouted and varnished for extra protection and to make them shine more.  You can also see the bamboo edging I placed behind to stop the soil coming over the top of the wall.

I have other mosaics in progress but you will can see what's happening with them on my Flickr Page.  I will also display them here with more information when they are complete.
